Electricity Connections. Simplified.
Eclipse Power Networks adopts innovative grid connection at the UK’s largest and most advanced ultra-rapid charging hub
Eclipse Power Networks, a leading Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO), has adopted the innovative 2,000kVA grid connection at InstaVolt’s Winchester Superhub, which was energised in February and opened in March 2025.
Eclipse was selected as a partner due to its innovative approach to network infrastructure, and its ability to offer flexibility that would not have been possible with a conventional distribution network operator (DNO).
The flagship Winchester Superhub is the UK’s biggest ultra-rapid charging hub for electric vehicles (EVs). The state-of-the art site, strategically positioned just off the A34 near Winchester, comprises 44 ultra-rapid charging stations, each capable of delivering up to 160kW to connected vehicles.
Working with independent connection provider (ICP), CX Energy, Eclipse oversaw, verified and approved all aspects of the connection infrastructure work. Eclipse’s flexibility had direct benefits for InstaVolt, allowing it to make cost and space savings through a single substation design that would not have been acceptable to a DNO. Additionally, Eclipse helped streamline project delivery by taking a more flexible approach to land rights – a legal requirement where electricity network equipment is situated on private property.
Neil Harris, technical director at Eclipse Power, said: “Our client is committed to expanding the UK’s rapid charging infrastructure, and has ambitious timescales for doing so. It’s a major driver for them, requiring that partners are responsive when it comes to design reviews, audits, and energisation.
“At Three Maids Hill, we worked with InstaVolt and CX Energy to help streamline the energising process. We understand the importance of speed to InstaVolt’s strategic goals, and were happy to use our flexibility to help accelerate this landmark charging site.”
Eclipse’s expertise was key to InstaVolt achieving a first: Three Maids Hill is the company’s first site to make extensive use of renewable energy generation and storage. To help manage and reduce its reliance on grid energy, the facility includes 870 ground and roof-mounted solar panels, along with 4MWh of battery storage. This model balances cost-efficiency with sustainability, demonstrating the future direction for charge point operators in the UK.
Tim Douglas, head of operations at InstaVolt, said: “We are redefining what EV drivers can expect when they charge: seamless, ultra-rapid, and future-proofed charging. This site is also a milestone in innovation, marking our first-ever location where we are generating our own renewable energy. Eclipse’s expertise, along with its innovative and responsive approach, helped smooth the road to delivery for this flagship project.
“Facilities such as Three Maids Hill are essential to improving the UK’s EV charging infrastructure. It’s important that we deliver a high-quality, high-availability experience to all who use them. Our partnership with Eclipse means we can meet those expectations with confidence”.
