Eclipse Power Networks to adopt electrical network for 220 home mixed-use development on brownfield site

Independent Connections Provider, Total Utility Connections (TUC) has selected Eclipse Power Networks, our leading IDNO (Independent Distribution Network Operator) to adopt and run the energy network of a major brownfield regeneration project near London. The new 1.5 MVA connection and network will provide power to 220 residential apartments, 50% of which are social housing, a café and assorted commercial and industrial units.

The mixed-use re-development of the brownfield site within the greenbelt faced considerable challenges and the application went through several iterations before planning permission was granted by Ealing Council. The plans needed to accommodate the sympathetic development of a listed farmhouse and barns, and environmental considerations such as sustainable drainage systems and boosting biodiversity and amenity value.

As well as connecting the site’s network to the grid, the commercial, industrial and residential units’ power requirements include charge points for electric vehicles that will be available for public charging. The seven residential buildings will feature air source heat pumps and also photovoltaic panels to generate solar energy for use on the site.

Flexibility and responsiveness win the day

Following a market review and tendering process. TUC selected Eclipse Power to connect the 1.5 MVA high voltage load to the grid, adopt the assets and run the energy network across the site on land near Smiths Farm, Kensington Road, Northolt.

TUC’s Business Development Manager, Lisa Bridgeman, said, “The comprehensive electricity network we designed to provide power to the residents and commercial enterprises on this tricky site needs a reliable, responsive partner to adopt and run it. We chose Eclipse Power Networks because of their competitive bid and their responsiveness. We know Eclipse offers best value when it comes to adopting assets over the long-term, and they will help increase the amenity-value of the development.”

Bhushan Kumar, Senior Business Development Manager at Eclipse Power Networks said:

“For the government and local councils to reach their ambitious house building targets, developments like this are ideal as they remediate contaminated and unattractive brownfield sites for the benefit of local communities.

“Working with Total Utility Connections’ knowledgeable and experienced team gives developers confidence in multi-utility connections, and ultimately ensures the viability of complex projects like the one at Smiths Farm.”
