Powering Up the North East’s EV Future: Eclipse Power Networks Energises Newcastle Airport EV Charging Hub

Eclipse Power Networks is pleased to confirm the energisation of the new ultra-rapid EV charging hub at Newcastle International Airport, delivered in partnership with Fastned.

Delivered in collaboration by Eclipse Power NetworksFastned and M&M Contractors, this new drive-thru-style hub features ultra-rapid chargers offering up to 400kW, capable of delivering around 100 miles of range in just five minutes.

Located at Callerton Parkway, the site provides 12 high-power charging bays, giving airport passengers, taxi drivers, and visitors a fast, reliable, renewable-powered charging option right by the A1/A696. It’s another key milestone in supporting the airport’s ambition to reach net-zero by 2035.

Spencer Thompson, CEO, Eclipse Power Group

Eclipse Power Group CEO, Spencer Thompson, visited the site on opening day and shared his thoughts:

“Standing on site today, it’s clear just how vital hubs like this are to the UK’s transition to cleaner transport. Fast, reliable charging isn’t a ‘nice to have’ anymore — it’s essential. Eclipse Power Networks is committed to unblocking the challenges that slow these projects down, and this hub shows what happens when everyone pushes in the same direction. It’s a milestone for the Northeast and a great example of what’s possible nationwide.

As part of our support on this project, our experts helped unblock several delivery challenges along the way. By providing in-house legal guidance and hands-on support across planning, coordination, and compliance, we kept the project moving and ensured a smooth route to energisation. This collaborative approach has strengthened the North East’s EV infrastructure and accelerated progress towards wider regional decarbonisation goals.

Jamie Aspin, Business Development Manager for the Eclipse Power Group shared:

“This hub is exactly the kind of project we love getting stuck into — collaborative and built to make a real impact. At Eclipse Power Networks, we specialise in unblocking complex delivery challenges, and our experts worked side-by-side with partners to clear the roadblocks, simplify the process and keep everything moving at pace. The result is a fantastic asset for airport users and the wider region, and a great example of how our end-to-end approach helps bring large-scale EV charging to life.”

Tom Hurst, UK and Ireland Country Director at Fastned, commented:

Our first airport location at Newcastle Airport is an exciting milestone. As people make the classic ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ journey this festive season, our new ultra-rapid charging hub forms part of our growing network across the North East, supporting hundreds of thousands of charging sessions and helping people travel sustainably across the region. So whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, exploring seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there are now faster, greener charging options available.”

Michael Miller, Regional Director at M&M Contractors, the appointed ICP (Independent Connection Provider) for this project adds:

Bringing reliable, ultra-rapid charging to this key transport location will make a real difference for both local communities and visitors alike, supporting the transition to cleaner, more sustainable travel.

With the network now live, we’re incredibly proud to have played a key role in enabling another important step in the UK’s transition to cleaner transport.
