Whiteleys of Bayswater
The Whiteleys redevelopment project have appointed Eclipse Power Networks as the IDNO for the redevelopment of London’s famous Whiteleys shopping centre in Bayswater, London.
History of Whiteleys
The site takes its name from the visionary entrepreneur William Whiteley who opened his first ‘Fancy Goods’ shop in 1863. Within a decade he’d strategically acquired a number of adjacent stores in his pursuit to establishing a single store where anything could be bought; the modern department store.
By 1890 over 6000 staff worked in the business which was taken over by his sons after his death in 1907. The colonnaded façade that still dominates the Bayswater scene today was completed in 1925 and is Grade II listed.
Whiteleys Redevelopment, Queensway
The redevelopment will restore the site to its former glory with a 21st Century makeover.
The new development, fronted by the retained famous façade, will include retail units, restaurants with a courtyard area, cinema, gym, hotel, energy centre and 153 exclusive residential properties.
The new electrical distribution network will be linked to the new Queensway development with a further 80 residential units, office and further retail units creating +10MVA in total capacity across the two adjacent developments.
IDNO adoption of the network
Eclipse Power are adopting 8 HV/LV substations within the Whiteleys site, which will help facilitate freedom of Energy Supplier choice for the numerous individually metered retail, restaurant, gym, hotel, and landlord customers.
Our involvement has allowed a fully adopted licenced network for the residential network. The combined solution of extending the licenced network down to 415V means there is no need for any client HV authorised personnel.
Working with our client, TUSC…
Working collaboratively with the clients project team that included TUSC, Laing O’Rourke, Gardiner & Theobald, Chapman BDSP, Crown House Technologies (CHt) and Reach Active as the Independent Connection Provider (ICP), we have assisted in developing an innovative design solution that ensured all the relevant expertise within the project team was utilised in the areas they each added most value in.
Collaborative design workshops chaired by the clients Utility consultant TUSC, ensured the electrical network design evolved with the input from a NERS accredited ICP (Reach Active), Building Services Consultant (Chapman BDSP), M&E contractor (CHt) and Eclipse Power as the IDNO, ensured all parties contributions were recognised to the projects benefit.
The licenced network extends throughout the development and was not an option for the local DNO. The design is a mixture of fully IDNO adopted and BNO adopted elements feeding +200 Eclipse registered MPAN meter points.
“The electrical distribution network solution of this prestigious London development was always going to be difficult challenge for any single party to resolve.
TUSC, working directly for the client recognised the complex issues and helped bring the relevant experienced expertise together.
This included Eclipse Power, who’s network knowledge valuably contributed to the project team, which was a pleasure for TUSC & myself to lead so effectively on behalf of our client”.
Steve Gist, Managing Director, TUSC
