Olympia London

Olympia Kensington Redevelopment

Eclipse Power Networks have been appointed as the Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) for the re-development of London’s Olympia Exhibition Centre in Kensington.

The new development is set to include two hotels, a cinema, a theatre, retail & office space, as well as restaurants and its own energy centre will be +20MVA & 11kV connected.

Eclipse Power Networks are adopting 20 No. HV/LV substations on site. This will help facilitate freedom of Energy Supplier choice for the numerous individually metered customers, and at the same time negating the need for any on-site client HV authorised personnel by extending the licenced network down to 415V.

Our role in the Redevelopment

Working collaboratively with the clients’ project team that included TUSCLaing O’RourkeGardiner & TheobaldDESCO and Reach Active as the Independent Connection Provider (ICP), we have assisted in developing an innovative design to meet the prestigious exhibition venue’s challenging programme requirements, as well as the flexible building & metering requirements.

Extending a licenced network deep within site boundary was not an option for the local DNO and whilst an extensive private network was considered, the IDNO option prevailed due to all parties working together innovatively to ensure a cost effective adoptable solution, that provided multiple registered MPAN meter points, was achievable.

This high profile project presented Reach Active with a further opportunity to demonstrate our long term technical experience of delivering extensive off-site 11kV HV power civils, cable and substation projects in a dense urban environment in a central London location.

Furthermore with Eclipse Power’s valuable input & collaboration we were able to extend the contestable works around the development, incorporating multiple IDNO adopted HV/LV substations, delivering a competitive and robust distribution network that provides security and flexibility to the client and IDNO alike

As the appointed IDNO for the re-development of Olympia in London, Eclipse Power Networks are due to adopt the electrical network with a predicted load in excess of 20MW.

The major re-development involves Eclipse Power Networks adopting the electrical infrastructure, with the current electricity supply being upgraded.

As the site develops, the exhibition halls will be transferred onto the new supply and new builds will be supplied from the new arrangement.

Completion is aimed for 2022 and the project includes:

  • Two new hotels, proving both boutique and high-end options for guests wishing to extend their stay
  • Two new major artistic venues incorporating a 1,000 seat performing arts space and a 1,500 seat theatre
  • 10,000sqft of performance and rehearsal space free for local charities to use
  • A new jazz-club style restaurant and co-working spaces designed for creatives and media companies
  • 2.5 acres of pedestrianised public space, including squares, streets and a sky garden
  • New cafés, restaurants and retail

In addition, there are proposals for a logistics centre and an innovative logistics management system that will help reduce exhibition congestion substantially.
